Default 95 4 X 4 **** removal

I have a 95 Chevy truck with the manual 4 X 4 shifter in the floor and I need to know how to remove the rubber/plastic handle. There is not a set screw and it will turn very slightly from side to side. I figure it is held on with glue of some kind but do not want to be wrong and tear something up. I am pulling carpet out due to water leak and this is the only thing left holding me up. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried hitting it upwards with a rubber mallet but no luck yet.

All you have to do is turn it off. there is no set screw. turn off counter clockwise.

They are held on with a large clip under the rubber part of the ****. I had to destroy mine to remove it but that was kinda the point cuz I had a shift **** I wanted on there instead.
