Default 96 2500 4l80

I have a 1996 2500 with a 6.5 turbo and 4l80 transmission. My transmission is bad and I don't have the money to have it rebuilt. I'm wanting to get a used one. I am needing to know what years of other trucks I can look for that will have a 4l80 that will work. I was told that the 97 on will not work, is this true? What's different? Is it parts I can swap with my original 96 trans?

Please help!!!! And thanks in advance!!

pretty much 96 and up 4l80e's will work because they are all OBD2 compatible. if you go 94-95 then they are a little bit different but i would stick with the 96-2000 years because after that they started putting different internals in
