Wondering if I could get some opinions on exhaust.

Truck is a 97 k1500 5.7 vortec, has dual exhaust, cats cut out, and 2 real loud mufflers. no y pipes, duals all the way back (previous owner)

I want to have a quiet exhaust system and put the cats back in, but don't want to spend a lot of money and still try and keep the performance gains from exisiting exhaust. so I was going to add in 2 x magnaflow universal cats to cover getting the cats back in.

What I would like help with is whether to use one muffler or two, the advantages and disadvantages. can I use one muffler and then into the 2 existing tips? I also want something that is quiet. Not really a big fan of the loud exhaust and I spend time at campgrounds so I don't want to disturb people.
