Default fuel gauge issue

I just bought a 2001 chevy silverado 8.1 litre. The fuel gauge stays on empty with the fuel light coming on until I place the gear selector in park then it will read full, but when I start driving the truck it will go back to empty for a while. Or if it is on empty I can turn the key on and it will either go to full (when the tank is full) or it won't do anything. Can anyone help me on this?

I think fuel level sensor is showing wrong reading. If you hook up a scanner you may find DTC P0461 to P0463 If you found any of these codes, check circuit,if it is ok drop the tank and replace fuel level sensor.
