Quick question. Is there any way to check the codes on my 2001 Silverado 1500 4x4 without a code reader? i know on some vehicles you can turn the key on a ceratin number of times and codes will appear.

I am pretty sure you can, its like one of those turn the key on & off 3 times, flash your brights, honk your horn, and clap your hands twice, then you get your code JK.

I am sure Shawnvw here can verify that.

The only way is with a code reader or scan tool. Only cars before ODBII were able to give code with out a scan tool. Back then there were not nearly as many things being monitored by the computer there for there were not as many code #s. Could you imagine tying to read a 4 digit code (like P1498)

basic readers are relatively inexpensive and a must if you really intend on keeping your vehicle any length of time and doing your own repairs even the most basic repairs. That and OBDII is universal for the most part, a code reader works for all domestic and most import cars and trucks..
Thou I don't understand with the DIC (driver information center) why they don't incorporate that little diddy right in as well...

Here is one at harbor Fright for $39
