shift cable issue
hello all.. i have a 99 chevy 1500 2wd, and am needing a replacement shift cable.. does anyone know a suitable replacement? the one i ordered is 18-20 inches shorter than the oem.. when i called the dealer, i was told it was on national backorder and not sure when it would be back in stock.. it appears all the replacements are 118 inches in length which again is much shorter than oem.. was there a design change? the dealer wasnt able to give me any info at all.. dorman number show a 905-605 which is 114 inches, even shorter than the one i have.. any help will be greatly appreciated.. number on the oem cable id tag is 15039582, which the dealer said cross referenced to gm-19434388..

I’m not able to confirm if there was a design update, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there had been. It’s pretty common for the replacement parts to be different than the originals in order to correct known problems.
Did you get a complete cable assembly or just the upper/lower section? If it’s just a section, it’s recommended to replace both.
What is wrong with the original cable? If it’s the bushing, repair kits are available.

on this truck it was a one piece cable going from the shift lever all the way to the transmission shift linkage.. replacing because the cable sheething had worn/broken in multiple locations and the pass through hole in the floor had rusted through totally where the grommet rests.

As long as the securement points are in the same place as the original cable, the overall length shouldn’t be an issue. Compare the cable ends - if the distance between the end of the sheathing and the clips that snap into the brackets are the same, it will work.
