Default Speedo reprogram?

I just put some 33" tires on my 2010 Silverado and wanted to have the speedometer reprogrammed for the bigger size tires. Of course, the dealership that I bought the truck from won't do it because GM says "you get what you got and that's it" for "liability" of course. Can anyone tell me what type of equipment is needed to do the reprogram so I can ask some other shops? Do you think that a reprogram is really needed, maybe I'm off base? Thanks for your help.

You can reprogram it with a performance programmer, but you need to ask the dealership before doing so because it can void your warranty.

I call B.S. Your dealership should do it. The day I bought my truck I asked them if they could reprogram my computer if I got larger wheels. They said it'd be no problem, just have to pay for shop time.

Hi ylee kyotee,

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

If you have a GPS unit, it will track your actual speed. But there's lag time involved, which means you have to maintain a steady speed for @10 seconds to get your real speed. This way you can decide if it's worth the trouble to make the change before you proceed. You can also check your speedo VS those township speed signs.

The dealership would've sung a different tune if you'd asked that question before you bought the truck.

Most of us(well, some of us ) wait until the truck is out of warranty before doing any major changes. This is one of the reasons.

You could also call around to local shops. It's been my experience that many of them don't want to deal with programming.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to take my GPS out this evening and see how much, if any, the speedo is off. I've talked to another dealership in a different town that I frequent quite a bit and they said no problem so I'm going to drop in there if the difference is quite a bit.

Unfortunately, it sounds like my wife must have been right when she was whining that she didn't want me to make changes to the truck yet because it was so new. Shoot, I guess I'm out of the loop if most guys want to wait for the warranty to go off before working the truck over. I'm ready for a new Corsa exhaust and a Blackbear Tune but guess I'll have to back 'er down a bit and let my truck "age" a bit before I get too carried away. That'll sure make my wife happy and I can never have too much of that. Thanks again for the help guys. Later.
