Default Trans. temp ?

I have a 2004 6.0l 2500 4L80 trans and 4:10 gears. After about 350 mile trip pulling a utility trailer loaded maybe 2000-2500 #. the trans. temp gauge was reading about 200-220 degrees I got a message of Transmission Hot in the message center. Why, the trans temp reads hotter than that when I pull my 9000# boat. I checked the fluid and it was full and hot to the touch but not super burning hot. I am confused to say the least.

The fluid goes thru the coolant which is running at least 200 degrees so that temp shoul be about right.

I'd suggest if your going to pull trailers, boats add a transmission cooler.

There is a trans cooler. This truck has 134k miles and has never shown the trans. hot message. the trip home the temp gauge never got over 175. I'm not concerened about the 250 temp, as I have seen that seveeral times pulling my boat up hills and always goes down to about 200. the question is why the conflicting info. the trans temp gauge and the trans hot message werenot giving the same info. What gives?

I'm not talking about the radiator cooler, but an external add on.

Just as he said, but it probably does have a tranny cooler stock. But it's a little one. Get a tru-cool 40k and don't look back

I understand about adding an aftermarket cooler. The real question is why am I getting conflicting info. I have pulled this trailer with approx. the same load on this same trip many times. Some withe the outside temp. much warmer with no trans. hot message. Why is the gauge reading in the low 200 degrees and the message says the trans. is hot. Do they both get their info. from the same sensor, or are there 2 sensors?

Not true.. the thermostat in the engine maintains the engine temp at or about 195f... the coolant in the radiator is generally much cooler and is the "cold" reservoir for the engine when the thermostat opens and closes to maintain that temp...
