[hr]Besides having the codes cleared with a scan tool, what is the DIY procedure for turning off/resetting the check engine light?

 

[hr]Forgot to mention, above is in regards to a 1997 Silverado 2wd 5.0L.

 

It has to be cleared with a scan tool.

 

You gottafigure outwhat caused the check engineand fix the problem. Depending on the code or codes involved once fixed the light will stay off. A few codes will require a determined number of on/off "cycles" without error before it will go out. You can always erase codes by disconnecting the battery for at least a half hour. That resets the PCM. The check engine light will come right back on and stay on till you fix whatever iscausing it

 

I can reset service engine lightby removing the two ecm fuses and turning key on for ten minutes reinstall fuses start truck this is on a 2000 silverado worth a shot

 

all depends on where the information is stored. A LOT of new vehicles will not clear with a battery disconnect...keep alive memory. For the ones that do clear...you could also lose the engine and transmission adaptive learn memory. the scan tool may not be the only way but it is the best way.
