1993 Suburban Transmission help needed

A friend of mine gave me a 93 Suburban it had been sitting in his yard for the last 2 years. When he parked it he said it was still running fine he had paid someone to come and install a new steering column in it... the man came 1 day took out the old and my friend never seen him again. So I put a new steering column in and drove it home. I checked all fluids and everything seemed to be great until last week i went to drive it to town and it started slipping i pulled into an O'reilly Auto parts and immediately checked the transmission fluid, there was no fluid on the dipstick so i put 6 qts in but it is still slipping
Someone told me it could just be the transmission shift solenoid so i went and purchased one but have yet to get my ol man to put it in for me can anyone tell me if this solenoid might really be the problem that way maybe i can get him to install it a lil faster!!! Also the parts store gave me the one that says 1,2 3,4 because it downshifts perfectly fine and it goes from first to second but second to drive just revs up the engine and then drive to over drive revs the engine and then it kicks into gear but it still sounds like it's stuck in second ANY HELP PLEASE???
