It was running when it died and will only start with starting fluid. The pump comes on with key for the 3 second prime like it is supposed to,the in-line filter is brand new and the pump was changed about a year ago, just put in a new distributor and ignition module and I am at my wits end with this please help if you can......

What should the fuel pressure be at before start, and after shutdown? Should there be any bleed down, and how much?

Is there a special tool for testing the fuel pressure using that spot you told me about (under the protective cap) or just any "pressure tester" also I am looking thru my chilton right now and I cannot find where it says what the fuel pressure is supposed to be. Can I test the pressure during the 3 second prime mode with the key in the "ON" position or does the truck need to be turning over when I test? By the way, thank you for your time!

I'd guess at least 45 psi, not sure about leakdown.

chev1989: The fuel port will look like a Schrader fitting similar to an A/C port.

You need a FI fuel pressure gauge. You can check with the key on, engine not running.

I had a similar problem. I had to "prime" the fuel pump 5 or 6 times to get it to start. I only had 55 psi at start up and I read somewhere that 75psi is needed. Becareful with that starting fluid tho, dont wanna burn up a piston do ya?
