Default 1997 Tahoe posi and axle spline ?'s
Hey, I have a 97 Tahoe 2 door with the z71 and g80 codes. My g80 no longer works and I am looking into purchasing a new posi. I am trying to decide between a Auburn LSD Eaton LSD or Detroit Trutrac. I do a little bit of muddy trail driving and tons of snow/ice driving. I don't want something as aggressive as a locker, or do I? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I also need to figure out my axle spline count. I know it is the 8.5 10 bolt but cant figure out the spline count. After looking at a few diffs it would seem it is a 30 spline. I called two dealerships and they couldn't tell me it, gave them the VIN and everything. So I guess I want suggestions on a good snow/ice diff and to know what the spline count is or how to find out for sure.-C

The G80 is an Eaton locker. Can't help you on the other questions.

The axle spline count is 30. Since 1988 they have all been 30 spline. If you are looking to keep the truck for awhile than I would strongly recommend the Eaton posi over the Auburn. Solely for the reason that the aftermarket Eaton is totally rebuildable where the Auburn and True Trac are not. Having spent 20 yrs. doing diffs the Eaton is better. As far as the G80 is concerned, yes it is made by Eaton but it is not the same as the aftermarket unit. Hope this helps

Thanks for the responses, I will look into the eaton, the fact it is rebuildable is a huge plus.
