Anyone ever had this happen to you? I have a 2004 Suburban 1500 4x4. This past weekend the automatic transmission stopped working. When i start it up it will go into gear, for about 5-10 seconds, then it will slip out of gear into neutral and will not drive any further. If i turn the truck off and start it again i get another 5-10 seconds of driving. Sometimes i get nothing at all, its not every time that it actually goes into gear.

I had a similar transmission issue, for me it was the sun shell cup (gear? don't remember exact name) going out, which took out 2nd, 4th, and eventually reverse.
One symptom I had that you don't describe is a loud thunk as it dropped out of gear.
I was able to put it into first gear, and that worked properly... a friend told me that the way the transmissions start is different in drive compared to putting in '1' on the column.

To limp it to the transmission place to get it rebult I was able to rev the engine up and go from 1st to 3rd and use 3rd gear the rest of the way there...
I'd check if 1st still works for you or not... that would allow you to move the vehicle around a little more while plotting your next move (I wasn't brave enough to try rebuilding myself)
