Default 2007 Tahoe: bad rear wheel bearing.

2007 Tahoe began to "growl" @ right rear wheel area. Inspected brakes and all to insure it wasn't some foreign body; all is clear and "growl" is evident when you turn the hub by hand. Rear differential fluid level is fine but there's shavings on the plug.

Yup, it's just outside the 3yr/36K warranty. To date, no other problems.

Two questions please:

1. I've looked online to check on any recall/campaign on this; none that I've found. Anyone else?

2. "Heard at the feed store" that the bearing is all one unit with the hub; that I'll be buying it all. Anyone know what I'm looking at in terms of difficulty and $$$?

Thanks, all.

I looked up the part at the local parts store and it shows an axle bearing. If that is correct then you need to pull the axle shaft and have the old bearing removed and the new one pressed on. Does it have a solid rear axle or is it independent susspension?

MudManiac, thanks for the quick reply and your considerate look up of the part. The axle is solid; no independent suspension. It's the wife's Tahoe; not 4x4 and just highway driven and not quite 60K. Does solid vs. independent affect the difficulty & $$$ of the job?

Welcome to the forum.

Sort of depends upon the design but generally speaking a solid axle is easier to replace the bearing on. Just like Mudmaniac said.
