Default 2008 Tahoe rear hatch won’t latch

We have a 2008 Tahoe and the rear hatch has been having lots of issues. The button near the rear view mirror doesn’t work at all anymore. We manually open it and you can hear the controls clicking. When we shut it, it won’t latch. It doesn’t happen all the time but most of the time. It just clicks like it wants to latch, but doesn’t. The dash tells us the rear hatch is open. We have replaced the latch a year ago and that did not fix the problem. This is becoming very frustrating! How can we fix this?

For what it's worth: I have a 2001 Yukon XL. When I first got it, 4 years ago, the barn doors would not lock. I could never figure out the issue. I changed all the latches, solenoids etc. Still no luck. I noticed one of the number plate lights was not working. I changed the light bulb and the plate lights worked. One day I was locking the Yukon, I clicked the remote and noticed the tail lights flashed. They had never done that before. I checked the rear doors and they were locked. That was 4 years ago and they have worked ever since. Never could quite figure out what happened but they work.
