4.8 or 5.3 for best mpg
Hello,
I'm new here. In the process of trying to purchase a 2005 or 2006 Chevy Tahoe. Tahoes with 5.3 engine harder to find with lower mileage. Is there that much difference between the mpg from the 4.8 to the 5.3. May be towing something in a few years, but just a small fishing boat. What is your realworld mpg for these types of engines?
Thanks!

I think you should hold out for an '07 or later for the new body style. The older trucks just aren't in the same class. As far as the 4.8 VS 5.3, I don't think the 4.8 is enough motor for these trucks. My '07 2WD LTZ with 5.3 averages 16.1 MPG and since it's my work truck, it gets driven pretty hard. It'll do 20 mpg on the highway at 70 mph easy, even better if you're not in a hurry.
My 05 hoe with the 5.3 gets around 13 to 16 plus depending on drive conditions (hwy, cty) and also hauling or towing. But in my opinion the 5.3 would be my choice because of like you said you might be towing a small boat or at least something well then youve got the peice of mind in having the larger motor and more power and torque for not only towing but just the actual size of vehicle. We bought ours with 86k on it a year ago and really its damn near brand new so the miles actualy didnt bother me plus you gotta remember thes things are made with the heavy duty 4l80e trans and they really are 250k plus truck if cared for properly. At least thats my opinion.
i have the 4.8 and average 15mpg but my buddy also has a 4.8 and he averages about 21mpg if he keeps his foot out of it. both my truck and his are 2004 models. i think it all depends on the trans and rear end of the truck

Thank you for giving me your real world experiences with mpg. The net is so full of "expertise" that your mind can get grid locked. I prefer information from the "users" of the products.
Thanks again, can't wait to be a Tahoe or as you say, owner of a hoe. My two teens will really look at me funny when I refer to my new vehicle as a hoe...
