The Haynes book just confused me more than I already was. Autozone insists that I need to know what kind of transmission I have in order to buy front end parts 0_o

I have a 1992 k1500 Suburban. I have read that there are 2 transmissions available in '92. One that is electronically controlled, and one which is vacuum controlled.

The transmission is a 4-speed automatic, with 3 cables coming off of the throttle body, but the cable that "should" be for adjusting the transmission gear change, doesn't have the adjustment button.

I also heard (somewhere) that you can tell by how many wires are going into the throttle body controller?

anyways, I uploaded some pictures to my album to explain what I am talking about. I hope that someone has time to take a look and let me know which transmission I have.

i'd bet its a 700r4

 

The 700R4 can be identified by the oilpan having a rectangular shape being longer front-to-rear than side-to-side and held to the transmission by 16 bolts: three bolts front and rear; five bolts left and right sides.

 

I believe there should be a stamped or tag near the top of the transmission that identifies the type...if I recall its on the passenger side but don't quote me...
I had to replace the tranny in my 97 Tahoe and the same question came up and I was told to find the info on the tag/stamp...

It is square with 16 bolts, so I guess it is the 4L60. I wish that they would put information like this in the VIN, instead of just "4 speed automatic"

 

Yea bro, count the bolts in the pan or even take a pic of the pan with your camera. There are always 2 transmissions for this car the 4L60 and the 4L80. The 4L60 has a smaller pan than the 4L80. They would both be considered the 700R4 and then you would need more information from the build sheet or something, but now you dont. In 1993 they went electronic so you also know for sure you have the older style.

This is only an issue for you because your truck is a K, if it were a C there is a huge possibility you would only have the 4L60(unless it was a gift or a special order).

 

if it has a TV cable its a 700r4 the 4l60es are all electric as far as shifting while you drive

 

4L60-E wasnt introduced until the 1993 model year. So it would have to be a hydraulic valve body 4L60.
