Default 96 suburban 1500, 350V8, 137K miles, cranks but wont start first start of the day

orig. engine/trans.

cranks fine, but wont start on first start of the day unless I use starting fluid. after first start, all other starts that day are good. does not stall. confirmed spark is good. opened the schraeder valve on the manifold - fuel squirts out good, but still feels like its not getting fuel on first start.

Sounds like your fuel pressure is bleeding off overnight. The usual problem is the check valve on the fuel pump in the tank. Rent or borrow a pressure tester and leave it hooked up all night. If the pressure bleeds off you have two options. Either replace the fuel pump, or install a check valve in the fuel line as close to the tank as you can get it.

Wouldn't the pressure come back up as soon as the key is turned energizing the fuel pump?

After the key is turned on it takes 10 seconds or so to build pressure, then it should start normally. Its just annoying to have to wait....
