Exclamation 99 Chevy Suburban wont shift out of Park! HELP!

My 1999 Suburban wont shift out of park. It has been sticking really bad the last few weeks and have had to really compress the brakes to get it to shift. I was just about to take t to see what was wrong when I tried shifting into gear and the shifter just went loose and now it only stays in park and will not go into gear. Its weird the shifter will move but wont catch into gear its really loose whith what I can feel. Please if anyone can help reply.

I think there is a shift interlock switch on the pedal that may need adjusting. Its similar to the brake light switch.

As op stated, your switch is probably out of adjustment. You may also have some type of linkage problem since you mentioned you have had to really push hard on the brake pedal in order for it to work several times. The switch may have gradually slipped, I would look there. Let us know what you find. On my same model year Tahoe, I can just barely touch the brake pedal and hear the switch activate, good luck.

Go to You-tube and search for problem. There may be a video that will help you.
