Bad valve seals allow oil to leak into the cylinder. At start-up it burns off, which makes the smoke briefly. The value seals can be replaced without removing the head.
If it were the rings then the engine would probably smoke, to a lesser extent, after warming up. A compression test would show which cylinder(s) are the suspect ones.
