Tahoe & Suburban The power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.

Default almost had a heart attack...

...when driving the Suburban today. Going down the highway in a construction zone, absolutely nowhere to pull over, when the DIC starts dinging "oil pressure low, turn off engine immediately" (or whatever it displays).

It's not fun trying to find a place to pull over when both the shoulders are closed. I work at an automotive machine shop and see on a weekly basis what can happen when oil is no longer between the crank journals and the bearings. Finally there's some space on the right and I'm able to pull off into the grass. Check the dipstick, check the book, apparently it's low. The DIC says 59% oil life remaining, I've got about 2000-2200 ish miles on it, so somebody remembered to reset the life meter the last oil change (even if they forgot to change the sticker). Or maybe it was never changed before I bought it, who knows?

Service opens at 7:30 am tomorrow (Saturday), I'll be there at 7:31 since tomorrow I'm supposed to drive to Niagra Falls. Tomorrow.

How low was it?

I remember a brand of oil (might have been Havoline) that took a Datsun 240Z and put the oil in it, ran it for a while, drained it, and drove it around a race track for a long time w/ no damage. I always called BS on the ad.

BG brought that truck to our shop for my boss to use in some class. I have seen it run with no oil pan on it. We did more than idle it.

Clever, but I'm pretty sure GM didn't use any of that stuff from the factory

I'd like to see it on an engine dyno under load.

Update:

Seems to be OK. I had the oil changed the next day. I asked the service rep to tell the tech to measure how much came out, but never heard anything about that. I drove from Chicago to Dearborn to Niagra Falls to Cleveland back to Niagra Falls to Chicago this past week with no issues, so I guess it's OK.

When I bought it just a few months ago, I had a brand new bumper put on as part of the purchase agreement. Guess what got ruined when I scraped it up against a tall curb?

Aaaaaaaaand it's back! Awesome! Looks like I have the DOD/AFM oil consumption problem. Let me tell you how happy I am about that.
