Default Auto Level Control Keeps Failing - $$$$$

2007 Suburban 1500 LTZ w/5.3L and Auto Level Control

I first got the car with 72000 miles. I tow a 25-ft Airstream with about 800 lb tongue weight, but I use a weight distributing hitch. The ALC comes on for a moment after I drop the tongue.

After just 3000 miles and a month after getting the car, the ALC compressor blew out. Dealer replaced it: $785 that was 12/12.

Well, I now have 95,000 miles, and it is one year later, and the ALC compressor has blown again. I told the dealer to button it up and I wasn't going to spend the money right now. It's a year and 3 weeks after I replaced it last time.

QUESTIONS
1. Can I safely leave it disabled? It broke 1500 miles from home and I towed the trailer home with it not working. Seemed fine.

2. Can I REMOVE this system all-together and replace it with ?? something else?

3. Is this failure caused from towing?

4. Can these compressors be "fixed" and put back in? Why do they keep wanting to replace the whole thing? Aren't there little part inside?

Thanks to anyone who knows about this.

Welcome to the forum.

Check out our sponsor - Arnott. Check the sponsor list on the left.

Bottom line is they can offer replacement shocks and a module that will keep the BCM from setting a DTC.

Thanks 73 Shark. If it has been any closer to me it would have bit me in the nose.

Looks like a way to save some money - thank you.

As well, jack the back end a little and have a peek at the air bags on the shocks. They may have holes in them.
