2006 Siverado Crew 4.8, 2wd
I've recently be bothered by the check engine light on my truck. Its been on since 55k, and I now have 121k miles on it. The code has always been P0449 and P0442. I would research for a while, then give up for a few months. I've now decided to fix it. As of today the mil lamp is off..(I kinda miss the light
). First off. Rock Auto is the place to get parts. Fast Service and a Good Price.
**What I did to fix it**
The first part I ordered was the wrong part. ACDelco 214-1105 Vapor Canister Purge Valve. $22.89. I received the part and right away knew it was not right, but since its part of the EVAP system I thought I go ahead and replace it since I had the part. Takes 5 minutes, and its under the plastic cover on top of the engine.
Mil Lamp still on
. I knew now the part I needed was the Vapor Canister Solenoid or Vent. But as we have all read, GM has changed the part to include a separate fiter box. Rock Auto wants $84.79 for this.. Not bad, but I wasn't up for another guess try. Somewhere a few months ago I read that the 06 Suburban uses the same Vapor Canister Solenoid that comes on the silverado. Apparently it still works fine for the Suburban (maybe its in a better location). *Note: I did remove my part and clean it (Yes full of dirt and little rocks, but that didn't help it)
06 Suburban 5.3L part on Rock Auto ACDelco 214-2149 $15.39. I ordered the part Monday and received it today Thursday. The hose that is connected to the factory part is hard plastic tubing that appears to be heat shrinked on. I tried removing with a heat gun, but that just made it worse. I cut it off about 2 inches back, and went to Auto Zone for some 1/2in heater hose. They had a 12in piece of scrap hose they told me I could have. (Scrap, but it was a new piece) And 2 hose clamps. I installed the new part. Disconnected the battery for 30min to reset the Mil Lamp. I just left it disconnect while I installed the part. Reconnected the battery and the light is off. Finally. Simple Job. Some photo's below. Sorry I could only add 5 attachments.

I have a P0442 code which seem similar. Here is where I am
1. Replace gas cap per Onstar suggestion, see attached pic of old (left) and new (right). Told computer should reset after 5-10 miles of travelling at 55 mph, or in a couple days of regular driving. Engine light did not go away.
2. Months later, engine light went away, came back now that the weather is warmer.
3. Replaced the purge valve PA-GF30 valve which took about 20 min, very easy, just above the spare tire under my 2005 Tahoe. Took negative cable off of battery for 1/2 hour to reset computer. Engine light did not go away.
Now I am wondering if I have the right gas cap, or if I need to replace the filler neck as the new cap seems different?

Thanks for all of the helpful information on this forum. My SES light on my 05 Tahoe was on for about a year. The first message was "tighten fuel cap." I purchased a new fuel cap however, the SES light remained on. After having AAP read my code (for free) the P0449 code appeared. I researched the code and discovered that my EVAP canister may be to blame. After $31, 10 minutes of labor, and 10 miles of driving, the SES light is now off. Thank God for forums like this. Luckily, the only thing I did at the Chevrolet dealership is purchase the EVAP canister. Thanks.
based on the P0449 code, i just purchased the replacement part kit (20995472) @ the dealership for $65. Kit comes with new hoses, solenoid, filter box, and bracket.......... you'll use every piece. I replace the unit in less than 30min. The worst part of the whole job is removing the spare tire. If you have to do this, search "you-tube" for a DIY video.
OK so I replaced my Solenoid on my 1500 and it was on the very front of the tank or a little box in front of the tank at the top sorry I know thats not much help I am writing because I have a question of my own. When I ran the new hose for the vent in the frame to the top of the transmission at one point the hose is about 6 inches away from the exhaust and I want to know if that is ok or if it will get too hot? any ideas?
