So if the components are calculated to fail after the oem warranty, then ... are you arguing for extended warranties? If extended warranties mean betting on your vehicle breaking down after the initial factory warranty, then your logic seems to imply that the odds are with you.

I personally think warranties are scams, and the business selling them are scum. They hire lawyers to write pages of fine print for them, to allow them to squirm out of any claim once they've reeled you in. When you do need them, they throw up all kinds of obstacles, make you jump through hoops, and generally make the process as unpleasant as possible. They are incentivized (make profit) from signing people up. Not paying out claims. In my experience, I would have been richer if I had kept the warranty cost, and paid for repairs myself.

I agree that it IS like betting that the worst will happen, which isn't rational or wise. I now take the attitude that I'll deal with things as they're required. Don't invest into things that MIGHT happen.

 

extended warranties are another money generating program for the seller. these warranties are also based on statistics. Like Insurance companies and casino's they don't lose in the overall scheme. To win, your vehicle must have a failure of a expensive component.
if you fix your own stuff; keep the money in the bank. For others; always having warranty is a piece of mind they don't mind paying for.

When we were looking for a reliable insurance agency, we've compared tons of agencies and read hundreds of reviews, and one of the few we found trustful was this one ( https://www.general.com/ ) called General. WE've signed up papers with them few months ago, and it's pretty reliable company, as we've noticed.

 

The local radio show mechanic - who has had his own ASE shop for decades, says he has trouble close to 100% of the time with all of those warranty companies. Some want him to wait a few days until "their" cheaper part arrives, some pay for part of a repair and no any associated items. He offers that he'd take on such deal if folks paid HIM the warranty amount in advance.

He says that stuff like alternator replacements have been denied because ATF wasn't changed in time, ridiculous stuff.
