Default Coolant capacity

Hey gang, I just replaced my t-stat and was wondering what the coolant capacity on a 2005 Suburban was. I checked the owners manual and it said 16.5 quarts but when I put in the Dex cool it only took less then 4 quarts. I waited a little while and and topped it off with water but there is no way I put 16 quarts in it. If I had to guess I put maybe 5-6 quarts in. Any suggestions as to what I should ? Thanks

Did you drain the radiator and block?
Its nearly impossible to get all of the block drained...
Are you using the straight Dex-cool or the pre-mixed?

If you use the pre-mix just add what you can to replace what you approximate was the loss from the swap...
You can also add to the overflow tank as any extra will be expelled if it's too much, and it will draw in what it needs when it cools... after a few cycles adjust the overflow tank to the correct level

Thanks in2pro, I did not drain the block but I did drain the rad. I flushed the system and then added straight dex-cool. I have mainly dex-cool in there thinking that I was going to put two bottles of dex and two bottles of water but I only got 3/4 of a bottle of dex in only. I have been adding water to the reserve tank hoping that it would mix with the dex and any excess would drain out like you said. More than likely I have more water than dex from the flush if it's in the block. Thanks again for your reply.

Once the system has stabilized, you'll need to get the coolant tested to determine the concentration and therefore the protection level. You may need to drain some and add more Dexcool to get the needed protection level concentration.
