Cracked Dash Issue - 2008 Hybrid Tahoe
Is anyone else having issues with the dash cracking ? If so, have you figured out a solution? Mine is nearly cracked all the way across, rattling like crazy. GM wants me to pay big bucks for a whole new dash. But Ive heard even the new 1s are also breaking.
2008 Tahoe Hybrid, 67K miles.
**Update 12/17/2013
I received another call from GM Social Media today. If GM spent 1/10th as much actually fixing defects as these worthless telemarketers they have employed to run us around, they would have much higher customer satisfaction. It seems as if the final deal is 50/50 (at least with Carl Black GMC). I could spend more time and effort to try another dealer with another service manager who is less slippery, but I dont really have time for that. I will have to replace this dash on my own, and Erica as I told you on the phone, please convey this message to your manager :
I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM GM EVER AGAIN !!!!!!!
*** Update 12/16/2013
I spoke with my local dealer today, Carl Black GMC. The service manager (who was very nice) took a quick look at the cracked dash and then led me into his office for a discussion. He offered to split the replacement cost 50/50 (approx. $400 out of my pocket). He said this decision was based on the following factors :
1. I bought the vehicle used (with 12K miles on it) 3 years ago from another GMC dealer
2. I havent used this particular dealer for service (although I have used Jim Ellis in Atlanta).
3. The truck has 68k miles on it and is out of factory warranty.
Im not sure what any of those have to do with a dash cracking in half after 2 yrs in a $50K truck, but he went on to explain the offer might have been different had I had more of a commitment to GM. I said "but wait, I bought a $50K truck, how much more commitment do I need to give GM?!" his reply was that he meant spending more $ for work done on the truck at Carl Black. I do understand his position, they are running an independent dealership, why should he have the eat the bill for a known GM defect ? I expected all of this so I was not surprised (and I will actually consider using this dealer for oil changes and such in the future, so not a total waste of time).
He also confirmed this cracked dash issue is widespread and did not think there was any difference between the existing dash and the replacement dash. Should I expect the same results in 2 yrs, another cracked dash ? He said there would be no "good will" for any 2nd repairs on the dash if that did happen.
All this is obviously not to my satisfaction.
Erica, I PM'd you these details, awaiting your reply. What GM needs to do 1). FIX THE DEFECTIVE DESIGN, and then 2). step up and offer replacement of the dash with the improved version under a extended warranty, similar to what they do for the Enclave water pumps.
I will try to be more civil about this, as I mentioned to service manager, Im an engineer and I understand defects do happen. But the company that gets repeat customers is the 1 who learns how to handle these issues. Unless something else happens here, dont expect my repeat business, and do expect me to explain this situation to anyone who will listen.
** Update 12/2/13
I did speak with GM customer service. They merely advised me that my warranty ended in July 2012, and I would be responsible to pay for a diagnosis fee at the dealer of my choice. Once I have paid a dealer to diagnose this well documented defect :
- entire facebook page dedicated to it : https://www.facebook.com/groups/251892298253/
- youtube video :
- 192,000 views and counting in a sticky thread on this forum : https://chevroletforum.com/forum/tah...cracked-26133/
- thousands of posts on google
- the picture in this very post
- ect...
on my vehicle, GM will decide to what degree (if any) they will stand behind their $55K product. Not exactly good customer service so far...
Anyhow, I will notify GM customer service once I have the quote in hand and report back if they will or wont make good on fixing this very well known defect. And I will be posting back on here (and many other forums) either way.

gruvenparts.com,
Sorry to hear you are having this concern. Did you speak with a GM customer service representative or did you speak with your dealership? Please private message me your name, VIN, address, phone number, mileage, and dealership.

I always buy a dash mat any time I get a new vehicle and never have any problems with the dash cracking. My last truck was a 99 and had 175,000 miles on it and the dash was as good as new. That is saying a lot with the South Florida heat.
I have PM'd you all info requested, Erica.
Oldchevy, I dont like the look of a dash mat, and furthermore I shouldnt need 1 in a $55K truck.
Im also pretty sure Im not the only owner having this issue, based on the fact that there is an entire facebook page dedicated to it now:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/251892298253/
You can also watch this video as long as you need to get the idea :
Ive also edited my 1st post and showed a picture, the cracks are almost completely through the dash now and rattling badly when the truck is driven. Not only does it look and sound horrible, more like a $5K truck than a $55K truck, it worries me as to what would happen if the airbag deployed - would it cause the dash to splinter and fire shards of sharp plastic at my family? Or cut the airbag ?
I really need this issue fixed.

I would bet there are tens of thousands people with cracked dashes in all the GM SUV's. Some are aware of the factory defect, but many probably bought the idea that it was either due to the sun, Armor All, or just natural.

FYI the dealer gets entirely reimbursed by corporate GM. I worked (interned) for GM and was in there sunroof/movable top group as a design engineer. We would go to the warranty parts center (located in Pontiac, MI) every other week to look at warranty related parts (every day was a different group, we would look only at sunroof/vert related problems).
Turns out, every warranty part is shipped back to GM and GM foots the bill for the dealer. They only do not if the dealer did not go through the proper steps (i.e. we'd see an entire sunroof replaced when they didn't test just the solenoid - which we would test and find to be the problem). DO NOT let the dealer use that against you.

PS I'm just joining this journey. Bought a used ave that just cracked the dash at 48k - bought used at 30k. I cannot wait to hear the BS about 'GM commitment'. Both my parents work at GM as engineers, I interned there for 3 years and they canned me with the downturn. Every truck I've ever owned is GM and they'll be all I ever own. Just because I don't support some bull**** middle man dealer doesn't mean I'm not committed to the brand.

Yeah I agree. I was actually offered a mechanical engineering position there about 10 yrs ago, in the Warren Tech Center. I decided to stay in Atlanta though.
Im not buying the dealer bullsh!t, dont worry. I do however understand their position. GM should resolve the issue on their own and not rely on the dealers to make the final decision. This is really poor company policy.
Anyways, I wont spend another cent at any GM dealer until this issue is resolved. I do need new tires and a oil change ($1K spend). I would love to use Carl Black dealer for this, but Kauffman will get the bid unless the issue is resolved.
I also need another vehicle to replace an older 1 (we buy a new vehicle every couple years). I wanted the Suburban, but will now get a F250 King Ranch. Another $50K GM is loosing on me.
I encourage EVERY owner to do the same, eventually GM will listen and fix this. They can simply extend the warranty on the dash to 100K miles and make good on most of the owners they have shafted. It doesnt make sense to screw your premium customers over, but I guess thats how GM went bankrupt in the 1st place. Incompetent leadership.
