Probably the first one my dealership has done, so I gotta cut them some slack. They are good guys.

Dealer replaced mirror (using my old cap ) today, and all is well. Shake seems to be fixed. Seems like the old onewas loose at the powerfold hinge, not the glass actuator itself, when I compare it to the "stiffness" of the new one.

BTW, I have the black primered mirror top cap off the new warranty mirror in case anybody needs one. Again it wouldhave to be painted to match if somebody wanted it to replace a cracked, or broken existing top piece.

Bub,

How did you end up removing your caps, did you remove from the inside or outside of the housing? When I move my mirror in as far as it goes I can see one of the tabs. However attempts to 'finess' it were unsuccessful.Using a thin screw driver on the outside of thehousingI feel I'll end up scratching it.I'm curious what approach you ultimately took.

Does anyone have a set of glossy black mirror caps in excellent condition, possibly someone that has upgraded to chrome? Please PM me... I have textured caps on my LSthatI want to replace.

Joe:Be advised, I only have the driver mirror cap, but yes it is primered and ready for painting. Make me an offer if you want it.I removed my painted capfrom the outside, by gently starting it from the outside vertical edge, lower corner, using an thin flatbladed screwdriver with electrical tape wrapped around the tip to minimize any damage.I got a little denting of the soft black plastic mirror housing edge (almost unnoticable), so I stopped and backed off. That didn't really matter, as I knew that part was being changed out under warranty anyway. If a guy could use a thin but wider flat blade made of plastic you would be golden, and be able to not "dent" the softer mirror housing itself.I didn't try to access the tabs from the inside. Just pryed off starting from the outside carefully and working inward.Hope this helps.-CKB

One additional note:

There are some vertical protrusions that aid in locating the mirror tight to the black mirror housing edges surrounding the edges of the mirror. Two tabs on top, inside the mirror enclosure, and one on both the inside and outside edges of the cap itself. The hooks shown in the pictures are for support during painting, as I don't see anything they fasten to in the housing.

The cap was moving away from the black housing at the outside edge (only an eighth of an inch or so). I disassembled and noticed that the dealer didn't install the cap correctly, bending one of these vertical locating tabs on the outside edge. It is quite thin (on the original version) and subject to bending. I straightened it out and all is fine. I noticed thatthe cap that came with the new mirror hasthis same vertical tab, but itis now significantly thicker in section (second later design), making the installationmore fool proof.

Hello 5 years ago!

Bumping this, as I'm going through the same hassle. I just can't get the unpainted cap off, I want to be sure there haven't been any revisions to the mirror assembly that make it really difficult to take off. I don't mind damaging the unpainted piece, but I'd certainly like to remove the stock painted one intact.

edit:

Well, got the unpainted one off, but not without breaking a few of the tabs off. I'm hoping the OEM cap will come off without any damage.
