Default Front hubs stay locked in 2WD

2000 Suburban 1500 4x4. At some point in time noticed worse fuel economy and more noise going on underneath. Decided to change the front hub assemblies since we are over 110,000 miles and probably time. Noticed that in 2WD the wheel hubs appear locked as if in "Auto 4WD". With the front jacked up and if you spin the wheel, the front driveshaft and CV spins. Changing to "auto" does nothing different. If you put in 4WD everything locks up like it should. In 2WD shouldn't the wheel spin free? It seems like it is stuck in "auto". What would cause the hubs to not disengage? I don't really know much about how the auto hubs work.

Thanks I will try that. In 2WD the front wheels should spin free correct? Without spinning the axles?

Funny I don't think of my Suburban as "newer" anymore. It's been through a lot. Pretty rusty underneath.

Anyway, does your '95 have the "auto" 4WD system?

I have a 1999 chevy tahoe 4x4 that works the save as your 2000 suburban. The hubs are locked in all
time unlike automatic or manual hubs. I figured this out when i switched from a nisson to a chevy 4x4. if you look closer you will see that the hub assembly is bolted right to the cv axle and cannot possible disengage. I don't really like the design because of fuel economy, but is one less part that can break or need to be replaced. Hope that helps you out.
