Fuel Gauge HELP!
I'm gaining enough courage to repair my fuel gauge. The fuel gauge reads empty then full then somewhere in between while driving. My friends have convinced me to replace the fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank. I still think the problem could be a faulty connection. I figured to inspect the wiring connections during the tank removal. What I have found so far is most part stores will only sell a complete fuel pump w/ level sensor ($290) and the local Chevrolet dealer estimates $800 to replace the fuel pump and sending unit. I finally found a parts store that can supply the level sensor only ($78 plus shipping). Does anyone have experience in removing a Tahoe's fuel tank? I believe a special hose clamp tool is required to remove three hoses. Also, I will try to run the Tahoe to as near empty as possible. Any other advice out there? Thanks.[:-]
It is a 2002 Tahoe. This problem first occurred about 3 years ago and went away after one day. It came back about 2 months ago and has been more persistent.
I have a multimeter but wonder if the time and effort required to test the dash gauge would be as much work as replacing the sending unit.
