Tahoe & SuburbanThe power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.
I just joined this forum and this is my first post. Yesterday I installed an Illuminated Bowtie on my 2021 Suburban RST. I love the results, but I wanted to provide my insight and experience to do the job.
There’s really two parts - access and remove the current Bowtie and access the electric harness on the drivers side headlight. It really doesn’t matter which one you do first, but long story short - the Bowtie is a piece of cake and the electric harness is a total pain to access and unclip.
First - remove two size T15 star/torques screws to remove the hood latch handle. Next take a flat head screw driver and lift up and remove the 10 round plastic push pin rivots that hold the black tray that spans the top of the grill. Once you do this you can see right down into the backside of the existing Bowtie. In order to get your had down to the Bowtie, you need to remove 6 silver bolts that hold the next most top part of the grill. Once you do that you can pull back in the top of the grill towards you and this will allow and few extra inches of movement and play and that will allow you to put your hand down to the Bowtie.
Now it’s time to access the drivers side electric headlight harness so you can connect the illuminated Bowtie Harness. I don’t care what you do from the top side when looking down to where the harness and headlight are…but I see no possible way to get your hand in there. So you need to turn your wheels all the way to the left and then go down to the drivers side front wheel well and use the same T15 star bit to remove 7 screws that hold on the soft wheel well protector. There is also one of the plastic push pin rivots that you previously took off up near the grill. Then pull back the protector shield and this will give you access to reach up to the headlight harness. Now this is the hardest part of the job because you still can hardly get your hand on that harness. Basically you need to know that the harness has a red locking clip that slides backward to unlock the two sides of the harness. This red lock slide will be pointing down towards the ground. Keep in mind you are doing this all blindly so you just need to do it by feel. Once you slide back the red lock, I believe you need to press in on that bottom side while you pull to get it to release and pull out. Once you’ve done that you are home free!
Next - I would take the new Glowtie harness and feed the wiring from the op side where you want it down into the area of the headlight. Connect it to the headlight harness and don’t slide the locking clip yet. Turn on your lights and test that it works. If it’s all good then you could connect up the harness and position it where it’s free and wI’ll live in a good spot.
Next - reach down into the grill and push on the 4 tabs that hold the existing Bowtie…it will pop off easily then. Now feed your wiring down and towards where your glowtie will go. Next you’ll need to drill a center hole for the new glowtie. You’ll see a round punch out circle exactly where you need to drill. Pop on the new Glowtie and connect the harness and you are done…after you put everything back together that you removed.
I love the results and the job is pretty easy. If some knows a better way to access the headlight harness, please chime in. That was absolute Bear!! I’m also including a picture of the harness you need to remove and the red clip you slide back. Remember this will be facing the ground as you’ll need to do it blind.
