96 suburban makes loud popping clink from back of truck when shifted into drive,can anyone help with what could cause this?

 

your u joint on the rear may be going bad

 

any way to tell if it's the ujoint?

 

get it up in the air see if there is any rust stain coming out ,try to rotate the shaft back and forth with your hand on the rear end yoke to see if their is any movement in the joint .

 

any way to tell if its the rearend?

 

try grabbing the drive shaft like mentioned before see how much movement there is in the rear end when you twist the shaft ,there will be some wind up on old trucks .if excessive you might need to have the lash on the carrier bearing's re set .
