Default New to me = 1984 4W 6.2l Suburban questions

Hi. This is my first post here as I just recently purchased an ole chevy suburban.

I intend on using it to knock around in, haul rocks, drag my driveway, dump runs, etc. So not pretty, just functional.

1) The dash lights dont come on, except the fuel guage...... Im assuming the other bulbs are burnt out? How easy/difficult is it to change the bulbs?

2) I havent had a chance to check the fluids or filters yet and my brother is supposed to come over on his day off to help me and teach me. BUT I got a call from my son last night and all of a sudden I have to drive about 500 miles round trip in it tomorrow to move him out here (long story, dont ask). Soooooo, crash course anyone? Please?

Any other advice/tips/thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

crap! I can't remember how those dash's came apart... I think you just start pulling screws...

those old diesels were pretty good. My uncle had one for a number of years that he used to haul cars to his shop with...

iirc those are non-turbo. check the oil, and keep fuel in it and you should be good... (for your trip) less there is some known issues with it. when you get back it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fluids and give it a good once over, fuel filters and the like.

well i would look and see what it calls for... the diesel I run is a lil old cat big truck, I'm not sure if it would call for the same type/weight oil.

you know just the basics, oil, antifreeze, ps, brake and trans fulids...

Go to Advance Auto Parts ask guy at the counter for 15w 40 Rotella T that truck takes 7 quarts so get 2 gallons save a quart for topping off as it leaks or burns. Get a Fram PH5 oil filter or equivalent.
Change engine oil every 3000 miles. All the other fluids the guy will know.
The transfer case takes 5 quarts ATF III.
The Transmission takes 4 quarts ATF III. The Fram transmission filter kit is like 14.00 get it.
The front 4.5quarts and rear 5.4qts Axle Differentials take 90W gear oil - Lucas brand is great.
Power steering fluid is basic power steering fluid.
Engine coolant change every 24,000 miles 50/50 ratio.
Brake fluid is DOT3.
