New Member: Looking for information
Hello,
My name is Brian and Im new to Suburbans. Im looking to buy a 99 or 2000 moodel as those seem to fit my price range and mileage requirements (around 100k - 130k). I need it to tow an open trailer and a car, total weight around 4500lbs. Ive towed this set up before for years with a 1500 truck with no issues. I would like to have a gas engine preferably.
My question is, are there any problems with these years to be aware of? What do you guys consider to be the best years between 95 and 2003 or so?
I would also like to get one with a liftgate rather than the split doors. This seems to be done randomly. Was this an option when new? I see split doors and liftgates on the same year trucks, no rhyme or reason.
Thanks in advance for the information,
Brian Jones

Welcome to the site. The newer (2003) the better. I tow a 23 foot boat and a utility trailer with my truck. My old 2000 Tahoe Limited had barn doors (split doors)and my 2007 Tahoe has a lift gate, it was much easier to get into the back of the truck when towing with barn doors than the lift gate.

it's a bit rare to see suburbans in the 90's and newer with tailgate. 99% had barn doors. even most newer 'burbs still have barn doors, tho a few more left the factory with liftgate. the actual liftgate won't be found on anything older that 99 or 2000. what you'll see on the older rigs is the tailgate style. glass up, 'gate down. tahoes and yukons will have the liftgate more than burb. agreed, stay '96 or newer for the better motors. keep an eye on tranny fluid condition, and how rig shifts, as some of these tranny's have been known to give it up on higher mile rigs, generally due to neglect. tahoes/yukons are only 1500, but the burb can be had 2500, a few 3500. these are what you should at, 2500 or bigger. the added weight from the full cab are adds more weight to the rearend than a pickup. plus you'll get the better rearend. airbags/helper springs in a 1500 would cure that as well. good luck
