Default Newb with Wheel questions

So, we just got a 2008 Burb! We don't tow a lot (maybe 3 times a year, with a 3300 pound travel trailer), mostly around town driving. Occasionally trips off of paved roads, but still mostly maintained. (We live in Northern AZ, and visit lots of state/national parks)

Anyway, this has some beautiful aftermarket 20" wheels on it. Nice, pretty, and shiny. I'm much more into the practical use (but they sure do look pretty)! Question is, what would I gain (if any) by getting more normal 17" wheels and tires for this thing?

Better MPG? More efficient towing? Just lose some good looks?
Thanks in advance for any advice/tips/suggestions!

Assuming you go w/ a taller tire to keep the rolling diameter about the same, the ride might be a little softer. Braking and mpg might be marginally better due to slightly less mass. Those 20s are heavy. Off-roading would be improved due to the taller tire.

cowboi,

There's a thread on this forum, which gives a link to a
Tire Comparison Calclator.

You can enter your OEM in it, then what you have, then
see lots of information on the differences between them.
I found it to be very informative.

But, just to cut the chase down some, here's the link...

17s will provide more sidewall for offroad excursions with less wheel to damage. There may be more tire selection and cheaper alternatives also. As Shark indicated, 17s will typically have better mpgs and softer ride (less harsh offroad).

Default LS

Does the Burban LS have the 4.8 or the 5.3

if you have the 5.3, just keep the 20s, that's an OEM size, so unless the ride is super rough or harsh, or you have tire pressure warning issues, you are going to have more cost and more pain to change them...

It's got the 5.3L. Good to know that there's only slight difference. New wheels and tires cost a lot, and there's no guarantee I could sell the 20's. Money is real tight, so I don't think there's a reason to change right now. Thanks so much for the quick replies!!!
