Tahoe & Suburban The power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.

Default Newbie ... Need help buying an early 200x Suburban

Need some buying advice. I like the Suburban / Tahoe over the Durango and Expedition. I plan to keep the SUV for 5 years or more. I fix all my own cars from brakes, struts, water pump, radiator, belts, replace all fluids, etc.

Some questions ...
-Are there certain models or years that are better than others?
-How much mileage is acceptable and how long do the engine / tranny last?
-What are some things to look for when inspecting the vehicle

Requirements are below...
-Looking in metro Detroit or surrounding area
-Year 2000 or newer
-Budget is $5000-ish
-Want 4x4
-Hoping to have the original engine and tranny
-8 passengers seating (do not want 7)
-Do NOT want non-oem items installed (i.e. radio, remote starter, etc)
-Car seat / latch system (it was required after 2001 by gov't)
-This will be the family "car" and will have 4 car seats installed at all the times. Plus 2 occasional passengers (grandma and grandpa)
-I will NOT be towing anything
-No, I do not want a minivan
-Will drive around town running errands. Probably max 500 miles driven per month so any money saved on a more fuel efficient vehicle is negligible

Some examples of what I am looking at right now

2002 Chevrolet suburban

2000 Suburban 3/4 Ton

Thanks in advance

That 2002 looks pretty good. I have an '01 with 185,000 miles, and it's still running strong with the original engine and transmission.

First thing that jumps out at me is the new fuel pump. It's a known issue, and an expensive fix, so it's great that it was recently replaced.

Other potential trouble items to look for - front wheel bearings/hubs, A/C condenser and clutch, power windows, brakes. Check the lower part of the body for rust, especially the rear quarter panels.

Take it to a good mechanic and have them check it out - compression test, exhaust manifold gaskets, front and rear axles, etc.

The biggest single thing for longevity is maintenance - were the proper fluid changes done? Oil changes, axle fluid changes, transmission service, etc. If the owner has good/comprehensive maintenance records, it's probably good to go.

These things are good for 200k+, though they do get a bit pricey on maintenance.

i would definitely check the axles, differentials for any moaning, grinding, and any noise at all. Also for the axles to be leaking. Mine has 117k and bought it 2 years ago with 100k. Been good and runs good but I have a moaning, whining sound form the front end in 4wd and have been looking around here on the forums and it seems hard to diagnose properly. It can be so many things. Good luck!
