OBD-II reader not reading codes
if your confident power is available to the scan tool...see what modules will communicate with the scan tool. if its just one module that is not communicating check the fuses that power that module.
just be aware some scanners like a genysis have they own internal battery and will power up regardless of if the dlc has power...but it won't communicate.

I was watching, as the scanner unit read 12v from the system. From that, I think it's fairly safe to say that it's getting power. We tried three times to communicate with the ECU/ECM.
I think this weekend, I'll find the pinouts and shoot for voltage from the pinout, just to be 100% postive.
Just shooing from the hip here, but I think if I'm getting good power, and the engine is still running, it must be one of the following: damaged wiring from the ECU/ECM to the scanner port or damaged port, bad ECU/ECM, or a firmware issue within the ECU/ECM.
Does that sound about

Thanks for the insight. I don't think it's a lifter issue. The engine sounds good and the RPM is rock solid with no drop in RPM at all. However, I'll keep this in mind as a potential issue.
What happened after the engine went into "limp mode"? Were you able to drive it home or was it not providing any power at all?

I had this very symptom/condition on my Suburban shortly before a valve lifter failed and wouldn't hold pressure. The engine would run fine and have a slight miss until the day the lifter completely failed. After the lifter failure I got a cylinder misfire code and the engine went into limp mode. Cost to repair at the dealership was well over $500. Not sure if this is your problem. But, the tach on my Suburban would show a slight and quick drop while engine was running smooth. Hope it's not the problem. But, thought any info gained could help you.
