Now that I've done mine, and have watched too-many YouTube videos, I see that some have cut away the plastic guard that obscures getting to this. That must’ve been a really early design or some random, off-brand replacement that a PO found - I’ve never seen one of these switches with that kind of shell.
It’s looking like your only choice will be to cut off the shell so you can get a socket on it.
The sensor these videos refer to is on the newer LS small block engines, located at the back of the valley cover.
The switch the OP is referring to is mounted in the timing cover near the crankshaft pulley - it provides power to the fuel pump once the engine is running.
