pinion nut help please 2006 Tahoe
Would really appreciate some feedback. I had a hell of a time replacing my front pinion seal from start to finish but made a real dumb decision trying to actually get seal into housing. After a lot of struggle I decided to use impact gun and flange to pull the seal in (I know, not my best idea) when I realized what I was doing I threw the drill in reverse and backed it off. Now I have no idea how much I tightened the nut but the seal was still not set in housing, it was still loose and undamaged. I got seal in finally and put flange back and tightened nut to thread count but my markings seem slightly off, it was pretty tight by hand and took some force to get to that point (no torque wrench) I didnt top off gear oil yet and I only slightly degreased spines but took it for a drive and I dont know if it feels a little different in pedals and steering wheel or I'm imagining it, I dont notice and noises or difficulty driving. So did I overtighten nut? The shaft spins by hand with identical force as it did before change, if the seal was undamaged and still not in housing could I have possibly overtightened nut or am I freaking out about nothing?
Thanks for any feedback!
Thanks for any feedback!
the only way at this point to tell if the crush sleeve and pinion are torqued correctly is to remove both axles and measure total torque to rotation and compare it to the specification. if you are over...the crush sleeve must be replaced. if you think its fine and want to chance it...keep driving. if the pinion bearings fail...they will let you know in there own way.
