removed and clean the intake throttle body, remove the air intake and open the throttle plate and if it is coated in black carbon that is causing the surging.
I'll try and locate the TSB for it....

Clean throttle body bore and throttle valve plate of carbon using a shop rag and an appropriate cleaner. Refer to Engine Controls Repair Procedures - Throttle Body Cleaning Procedure. For 2003 model year vehicles, look in the operating system portion of the calibration. For 2000-2002 model year vehicles, look in the engine portion of the calibration. If not, then update the PCM calibration to the latest calibration.

thanks for all the replys sorry it took me so long to get back to you all. I think i may have fixed the problems havnt occured any more. the stock tow package on the truck has the 7 prong receptacle. aparently i drug the back end on the ground a couple months back and broke the cover off the receptacle. then sunday night i backed in to a snow bank and packed the receptacle with snow wich melted and refroze into a block of ice making contact with all the prongs. i found this while at work and pulled the plug off the witning harnes and sealed the harnes end as best as i could. and all the problems just went away and the engine light is working again.
