Default power window makes awful noise and does not work

Hello all,
My 2003 suburban's drivers side window made a grinding noise and stopped half way up today. It was cold this morning about 26 degrees F, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I got it to go up by having my wife press the up button and me using my palms on both sides of the window pulling up, so we are closed. But the grinding noise continues.

What is the fix here, to replace the motor? Is this something I can do myself? I have half way decent skills at fixing the family cars.

Thanks
ayb

Probably the regulator. Take the door skin off and check it out to be sure

Thanks Shawnvw,

Is this something I can do on my own? Iam fairly competent. ;-)

I got a price for the motor and regulator as they are sold as a unit for about $120 from www.partszoneonline.com . The dealer is quoting $346 to do the job, so that has to be over 2 hrs labor if the price I have is similar to what they are using.

Also is there a good service manual for this truck that you would recommend?
Thanks again

Chilton makes great manuals

[ol]Raise and support the window glass.
Remove the trim panel. Refer to Front Side Door Trim Panel Replacement .
Remove the water deflector. Refer to Front Side Door Water Deflector Replacement .
Disconnect the harness from the electric window motor assembly.
Remove the 2 bolts that hold the window glass to the regulator.

Remove the bolts from the window regulator.
Remove the window regulator assembly from the door by folding both sides of the window regulator assembly together.[/ol]
