rear drum brakes???dave!!
maybe you can asnswer this for me. i just got a 07 gmc sierra crewcab, and just noticed that i comes with rear drum brakes instead of disc brakes like before. can you tell me why the change? thanks dave.
The reason is primarilydue to balancing the braking system, customers of the older GMT800 series ½ tons often complained about the brakes being way too sensitive. Due to the nature of disk brakes it was very difficult to integrate DRP (Dynamic Rear Proportioning) and have the rear brakes not be overly exaggerated.
Rest assured that the drum brakes used on all the new GMT900 pick-up’s with 5.3L and smaller motors are up to the task, the GMT900 products actually have a shorter stopping distance over the previous years. One other benefit of drum brakes is that they are less susceptible to contamination which can have a negative effect on stopping and cause corrosion in states that use salt to clear snow.
I drive a new style Silverado with drums and bragging rights aside I love the way the brakes function.
