Can I just get a key cut or is there a chip in it?

 

There is a transponder in the key. You also have to get it cut. it is easy to program and you can do it yourself in a few minutes.

 

You can order the key on Amazon. When the blank arrives, take the blank and the old key to a locksmith shop and they can cut it for less than 5 bucks. Your Chev dealer can do this but the Amazon way is much cheaper. For all of you who have already lost one key, and only have one left, prepare to bend over at your dealership to get new ones if you lose the last key.

I got mine at Home Depot. They cut the key for $40 and I programmed it in a minute.

 

do not trace an old key to cut the new key. cut the new key from a key code.
these keys are notorious for wearing and being difficult to turn in the ignition.
