Default Suburban 2000 1500LT rear air shock leaky

Our dealer just notified us that the rear auto level shock is leaky and will cost $850 to replace this one shock with GM part! They say that the air compressor will be compromised if I don't fix soon. Is there another alternative shock that I can use such as Monroe or Blisten that would be as good or better than factory shocks? And are they fooling with me on the air compressor going out?

Welcome to the forum. I think you may be stuck with ACDelco or genuine GM parts with the auto level control. And, I don't think they are "fooling" you if it's air that's leaking which will make the compressor work overtime.

Might check GMPartsDirect.com as I think the shock itself is around $400.

Default Leaky shock

I'm being told now by another mechanic that when the shock goes out, the display will show an indicator that I have a faulty shock. I do not tow with this vehicle, so I may be safe to wait awhile. Any personal experience with this out there?

Check out strut masters, they sell kits to remove the air suspension.

I don't want to get rid of the air shocks. They serve a purpose. I just want to know how important it is to immediately get them replaced if they are just leaking.

The "SERVICE RIDE CONTROL" message in the I/P cluster will come on for various reasons that have to do with the auto level control. Your problem seems to be that there's an air leak but the compressor is able to compensate for it but at the expense of additional duty cycles. That'll shorten the service life of the compressor. It's your vehicle but it's like "you can pay me now or pay me later."

RockAuto has a Monroe replacement for the Autoride for about $255 each... I did not see a listing for the compressor... but if it goes its going to cost several hundred also....
