We don't drive our Suburban in the winter so we had the battery out of it. We put it back in and it rolls over but won't start. Sometimes backfires through the carb. Seems like it needs reset. Does anyone know how to do this?

Not sure what you mean by reset but if it's backfiring thru the intake, sounds like a timing issue.

What year?

 

It's a 1999 so yes it does sound like a timing issue but you can't adjust it like the older engines before computers. It ran fine when we parked it which is why we were thinking the computer just needs to be reset.

 

How does one "reset" the ECM?

Any codes set? Maybe crank sensor died over the winter.

 

my 95 does the same thing, each and every time the battery is disconnected. The only way for me to restart is turn the key to "on", put gas pedal to floor then start. Takes a couple seconds but usually fires right up.

 

Thanks for the info. We did find the pedal to the floor in the manual and had tried that. But it was after several attempts otherwise. We also tried the leaving the key in the on position idea that some had posted about the security system reset. Tried again several times last night. Tried again this morning and it fired right up. Now it starts fine. So for others - I think holding the pedal to the floor as a first try is your best bet. Thanks for the help!

 

IF you didn't already, might want to add a few bottles of fuel treatment as the old fuel can varnish up and cause starting and idle problems....
