I've got a 1997 Tahoe 4WD with 117k. The Reverse gear no longer works. Is the tranny fried or can it be rebuilt. With 117k should I just buckle down and get a new transmission w/ waranty etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

 

Are you on the original tranny?

normally when you loose a gear its the beginning of the end.

 

Yes, it is the original tranny.

 

You can check around some tranny shops to see if it is worth repairing, but be very careful. There are some sharks out there. Its probably time for a new or rebuilt one. Get tranny shop recommendations from friends who have actual experience with getting theirs done.

 

A friend of mine had the same problem with his '97. He had it rebuilt and it lasted about 10 months. Went back to the same shop and they ended up giving him a deal on a new one. Good luck!
