Default transmission went out today:(

the wife was driving the 99 K1500 and she said she heard a loud clunking sound and the car lost power. the engine was still running but could not put it into drive without a horrible sound. it drove in reverse but not forward.. im assuming transmission, but need some thoughts on what to do next... pay shop to fix it, do it myself or get another transmission and intall different one.
thanks

Welcome to the fourm,
It would be my guess that it is the transmission also, you may be able to find a re-manufactured. I got mine for my 97 Tahoe 2wd at A-line auto here in Austin for about $1200. It was a reman GM tranny with a full 12/12 warranty. A-line has a store in Waco.

Sounds more likely that the transfer case or rear diff broke. Usually but not always once the initial failure in the trans happens it does not continue to make noise. I would have a experienced shop take a look at it to verify which is the cause.

If you want to do it yourself buy a used rear drum to drum.

yea, MD dude is right. If you buy one drum to drum then all you have to do is undo brake line and suspension points and its in & out, real easy.
