I had my 2004 Tahoe Z71 Insturment Cluster replaced by dealer per recall in 2007. It is out again and the factory is going to still honor the recall.
However, the dealer says I need to pay labor and Tax but they'll cover the part..which they say is a $300.00 part. Does this sound fishy to anyone? I figure a recall is a recall...Chev picks up the entire repair..labor, part, tax and all.
Please tell me what you all think of this?

find a cluster repair service on ebay or by internet search. If its only the guages or back lighting You can do it yourself for $5 per guage.

Thank you for your reply, I'm still wondering why did I not pay a dime last time the recall repair on the cluster was done?
It was done at the dealership while I waited for it. It didn't take long. Is it because it was done once already? I figure they should pick up the entire cost as it's a defective item, on a recall list by Chevy.

the dealer records the cluster part number when diagnosed. The new one is ordered in and your old cluster is returned for core. The replacement is programed and the current mileage and hours updated to the new cluster. So you probably had 2 visits to the dealer. It is not fixed in house.

Would you please PM me your VIN and mileage, so I can look into this further for you?

Here's my instrument cluster out of my 04 Tahoe

Here I marked where the guage needles were by putting tape right on the black plastic part. ON an 04 Tahoe, the needles must be removed (popped off) before one can separate the black plastic and the circuit board

Here I am soldering a few weak leads. I'm hoping I got the right ones and that they all have a good connection.

I put the cluster back in and it works! My PRND321 were fading in and out and when I tapped on the plastic dash, it would light back up..then fade. So with this forum and YouTube, I fixed it myself!! Thank YOU so much all!

Great post! Thanks for the pics and write-up.
It's been my experience that a lot of electronic failures are caused by cracked solder joints especially in things that see a lot of thermal cycling.
