I have seen this video but it doesn't show me how to remove the trim covering the 4 bolts holding the speedo in place. You said there are some clips underneath holding it in? From the bottom rear or bottom front. How do I get to those clips?

I took apart my dash again to show you the clips. You should at least hook a brother up with a cheese burger or something. Just kidding. Anyway this is what i did. It looks like your stumped at the trim ring around the speedo. The clips are very hard to undo and if you stick your screwdriver or prying device or whatever to pry up on the trim ring too deep, you can scratch up or crack your clear lens over the speedo so be very careful. After you remove the top trim held on by 4 Phillips screws, there’s a gap to the left of the fuel gauge just big enough to get a finger in. As you pry it up some, slide your screwdriver in about an inch and carefully work it to the right has you pry up with your fingers. its going to take some force but it will unclip itself and expose the 3rd bolt. Do the same thing near the temperature gauge and it will expose the fourth and final bolt. If you lift up some on the bottom of the trim ring and work it back and forth while pulling on it, should come off. You should have easy access to all four 7mm bolts holding down the instrument cluster. After you get all four bolts removed, tilt your steering wheel all the way down and pull out the speedo from the bottom. Hopefully some of these pictures will help you.

Great job with the pics rruelas! That trim slowed me down the first time too... then I realized I just had to pull harder and it comes off.

I disagree that the price they are charging on e-bay to repair these is fair. If you think about it 125 - 200 bucks for 10 minutes of work but, to people that don't own a soldering iron I guess it's way better than what the dealers want and then you still have an accurate odometer and stuff.

I owe you a cheese burger... two of them rruelas. I could see where there was clips on the bottom but I guess I wasn't pulling hard enough on them to pull them out. You are a great help. Thank you.

Thumbs up

rruelas Excellent write-up and tutorial...your write-up, hopefully will save someone some frustrations and also help others understand what is done even if they decide to send it off to be repaired....
And as you stated the cost that some places charge is not necessarily so unreasonable giving the time and tact that is needed...

And as always pictures speak volumes...

Tip
A replacement cluster must be programmed. Refer to Control Module References .
Does the whoile face of the dashboard have to come off too? I removed the top two screws from the cluster trim plate but couldn't remove the plate. Seems to be caught on the edges at or near the dic buttons and the dimmer rotating switch. Feeling stipid here.

Default IPC Out

I just wanted to say thanks for all the great information! My IPC went out - no Info, no PNR123, no gauges which effected my cruise control! After studying this forum for a couple of weeks I bit the bullet yesterday and removed the IPC - everything went as planned but when I got down to the PCB I didn't see anything obvious so I plugged it back into the car so I could take some readings on my DVM - what can I say, as soon as I turned on the ign switch - everything came back on and it was working!!! I had forgotten the first rule of troubleshooting! Unplug it then plug it back in!!!! Again thanks for all the great information!!!
Unfortunately the speedometer is off so now I need to go back in and reset it otherwise it is going to bug the heck out of me!!!

Seems like there's some good electronic techs on here so I have a question.

My '02 Astro has it's seatbelt and CES/MIL/SES lamps out. The lamps are LEDs soldered onto the PCB. Is that an easy fix? What are the specs on the lamps...watts, volts, etc?
