The serpentine belt drives the outer A/C compressor pulley. The A/C compressor clutch locks the outer pulley to the inner compressor. The schematic below shows the control circuitry for the A/C clutch. The 12-volt signal to the clutch can be interrupted by 3 different fuses (HTR, DEF & A/C). The clutch can also be disengaged by inputs to the Compressor Control Module from the refrigerant pressure switch and the PCM (stomp on the gas pedal) cutout signal. If you are getting 12 volts to the clutch and it is not turning, you probably have a bad compre$$or. I am including the theory of operation for the clutch circuit.

No news yet, I've been working a lot. No time to work on the Tracker. Should just pay my mechanic to fix it since they're making us work extra days at the coalmine.

Its the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley...…….It happened on my other Tracker a few years back but that one was easy to see thrusting forward when revving the engine. On the present Tracker I couldn't see the crank pulley thrusting forward, it was stuck forward which is why the belt was barely hanging off of the tensioner pulley and then when I wasn't looking it slip back and the belt rode properly on the tensioner pulley. The burning rubber I was smelling was the rubber between the main part of the pulley and the part the belt rides on. The rubber gets old, dry, and hard allowing the outer part to slip and not turn as fast at the engine wants it to. So I ordered a new crank pulley from "the bay" , be here by Thursday. Thanks for all the suggestions. This forum kicks ***.

That is the absolute last thing I would have guessed for an engine overheat. Amazing.
Please upload a photo of the damaged pulley.

For those that have not done this job before, here are some tips.

I made my own tool from steel I bought at Lowe's.

OR if you have an assistant:

I have the Tracker ready to install the new crank pulley/harmonic balancer. Looking forward to piling up the miles again on the ole' girl back and forth to the coalmine. I got the crank pulley off by putting a ratchet on the bolt with a long cheater bar resting on the drivers side fender and bumping the engine over with the key. Worked the second time. The first time it broke my 3/8 drive ratchet, had to use my brother-in-laws 1/2 drive ratchet.
When you add everything up such as everything happening at once such as overheating, stiff steering, battery light flickering, & the A/C not as cool, I should've known since the crank pulley went bad on my 02 Tracker 5 or 6 yrs ago. Anyhow, got some bad news, I don't know how to upload pics to this forum LOL. Thanks again, I hope my experience helps someone out with their Tracker problem.

Anyone who can remove a crank pulley can upload a photo. It's a 5-step process.

Well that's all cool and stuff but I don't even know how to put pictures on my computer, so there ya go. I can drag a knee riding a Honda CBR around a road course, I can make mashed potatoes and gravy from scratch, and I can change a crankshaft pulley but I cant put pics on computer ! If you want pm me your cell # and I will text you a pic and video L84sky & you can put them on the forum LOL.

Summit Point, in WV, Jefferson County, about an hour north west of D.C. I rode the main circuit and the Shenandoah circuit. Motorweek uses those tracks for the TV show on Velocity Channel, well now its called MotorTrend TV.
