2003 V6 transfer case works buck front axles not locking. What am I missing? Also no 4X4 light on the dash lighting up when I shift transfer case into 4X4.
Ok I found a pretty good thread on this issue. The first time I searched I guess it didn't like my wording and I got nothing. Where I wanted to start with this is just the basics. Which fuse is the pump run with, and where in the engine bay is the pump? I am in a snow storm right now and if I knew where to look it might help. I am a retired mechanic and bought this tracker for my move to Alaska. I had no idea the 4X4 wasn't working until I needed it here. Kinda funny that I moved here with two 4X4 vehicles, and neither of them works. I have had manual locking hubs on all my 4X4 vehicles through my lifetime. This crap makes no sense to me.

The air pump is not fused. It is driven directly from a power transistor in the PCM. (Pinouts shown are for a 2001 Tracker)

It is bolted to the frame behind the front bumper.

As long as pin 18 of connector C3 sees a ground at G105 (through the closed pressure switch contacts) the 4WD light will remain off. When the pump pressure builds to 6 psi the switch opens, the motor stops and the 4WD light illuminates.

Thank you. That is exactly the information I needed! I was hoping I could just give that air pump a whack with a hammer and see if my magic mechanics hammer would give it a quick start. Most of my tools are still in storage. Gues I'll pull it out and get it on the bench.

I went out to take a look at the pump. OMG! Why the heck would they stick it in a place you can't get to?
Anyway I have one more question before I take the pump out. Where is the switch that drops a ground on the pcm to activate the pump when you put it in four wheel drive? Is it in the car at the shift linkage or is it at the transfer case? None of the schematics I have seen show that part of the circuit.
Went out with a helper and tried the magic hammer. Haha! The pump came on! But still no 4X4. More testing to come, but several items checked off the list. Thanks again.
Next question is how do you people get to it to remove it? what do you remove to gain access?
I have not seen a pic that shows the right side of the bracket. I assumed there was a bolt on that side as well. Looking from under the car I can't see the right side either. But I do think I can get that left side bolt out and see if it comes off with one bolt.
The picture I just found shows a bolt on both sides of the bracket. I can't even see the right side under the car. I was just wondering what others had to remove to gain access to both bolts. I feel like I am missing something. Laying in a snow pile is not helping.
